In Amsterdam I had the pleasure of not only meeting the world famous cellist Frances Marie Uitti, but to also make a custom cello playing version of the Layer Chair for her. After a performance in the Theatrum Anatomicum, she fell in love with the parametric chair design that I have developed. And once Alex Schaub told her that it is possible to adjust the profile and size of the chair anyway you like, we had no choice but to make one for her.
Frances has very specific preferences for how she would like to sit while playing the Cello. So we sat down together and made her the ultimate chair by playing with my parametric system. We adjusted the front profile of the chair to go slightly downward, making it comfortable to sit on the edge while playing. The middle part of the seat is at exactly 550mm height, about 100mm higher than an average chair. Once we had the new parts, we nested them and sent the job to the ShopBot. Again the material choice is 18mm black MDF.
Frances is developing a very interesting electric cello that you can read more about here. You can download and customize your own Layer Chair here. If you would like to order a custom made chair, contact me.
